The $725 Million Facebook Privacy Settlement: What GLOBALS in the US Need to Know
Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has agreed to a massive $725 million class-action settlement over privacy violations related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. In this blog post, we will discuss what our US-based GLOBALS community should know about this settlement and how eligible members can claim their share.
The Cambridge Analytica Scandal
In 2018, it was revealed that the personal data of 87 million Facebook users was improperly shared with British political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. This data harvesting had serious implications and led to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg testifying before Congress and apologizing for the company’s missteps.
Eligibility for the Settlement
The settlement applies to Facebook users who maintained an active account between May 2007 and December 2022 and were residing in the US. Eligible GLOBALS have until August 25th to submit their claim, with individual payment amounts depending on the number of users claiming and the duration of their Facebook activity.
Claiming Your Share
To claim your share of the settlement, visit Facebookuserprivacysettlement.com and provide your name, address, email address, and confirm your eligibility by acknowledging you were active on Facebook between the specified dates and lived in the US. Keep in mind that individual settlement payments have not yet been determined.
Meta’s Stance on the Settlement
Though Meta, formerly known as Facebook, did not admit any wrongdoing, they pursued the settlement in the best interest of their community and shareholders. A company spokesperson stated that they are taking steps to prevent similar issues from arising in the future.
This settlement offers a chance for eligible US-based GLOBALS to claim their share of the $725 million payout. If you believe you qualify, be sure to submit your claim by August 25th. By staying informed about this and other privacy-related matters, we can continue to foster a more secure online community for all GLOBALS.
