Apple’s Vision Pro: A Glimpse into the Future of Mixed Reality

Apple’s shares began the week with overflowing optimism, soaring above their historical height at the start of Monday’s session. This surge was driven by the anticipation surrounding the tech giant’s mixed reality glasses, ‘Vision Pro’. However, following the product’s presentation, Apple’s shares fell from their peak at a loss of 0.76%.

The Vision Pro glasses were unveiled at Apple’s week-long Developer Conference. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, introduced the key features of the product, which has been eagerly awaited by fans of the brand for months. The Vision Pro allows users to navigate through their favorite applications using their senses. Users can open, close, or use any program with their sight, voice, and body movements. The applications can move in space and expand or contract at the user’s discretion. In addition, the glasses include a system that allows the wearer to see people around them. It also displays the eyes of the person wearing the Vision Pro to others. Among other functions, the glasses enable users to watch movies in three dimensions, play video games, take photos, or record videos, also in three dimensions. With the Vision Pro, Apple aims to compete with Meta’s virtual reality headset, the Meta Quest 3, which will be released this fall and will cost $499.99 for the 128GB model.

The sale of the Vision Pro will begin at the start of the next fiscal year. Analysts predict that its sales will increase Apple’s revenue by 7% in 2024. However, they also suggest that the product’s full potential will not be realized until there is an evolution in complementary technologies. Timo Toikkanen, CEO of manufacturer Varjo, highlighted the complexity of the product category. He noted that a wide range of technologies need to come together for such devices and experiences to be compact enough for everyday use. These include advancements in optics, energy management, thermal management, and computing power.

Apple’s Vision Pro has certainly made waves in the digital sphere. These mixed reality glasses, which will be retailing at $3,499, have been hailed as a groundbreaking product with the potential to supersede the iPhone. Yet, the reception on social media has been mixed, with many users viewing the concept as more dystopian than revolutionary.

The Vision Pro glasses have been likened to the mixed reality glasses that Mark Zuckerberg introduced at the 2016 Mobile World Congress. Despite the tepid response that Zuckerberg’s glasses garnered, Apple appears undeterred in its pursuit of similar technology. As we anticipate the launch of the Vision Pro glasses next year, the internet is rife with memes and jokes about the upcoming device.

This isn’t the inaugural instance of a tech giant’s product becoming the butt of internet humor. Google’s now-defunct Google Lens and Zuckerberg’s mixed reality glasses have previously been subjected to similar reactions. This recurring trend may suggest a disparity between Silicon Valley’s futuristic vision and the perceptions of the general public.

The Vision Pro’s hefty price tag has been a focal point for many, while others have drawn parallels with the dystopian TV series, Black Mirror. The design of the glasses and their potential applications have also piqued the interest of netizens.
