A Stairway to Success: An Interview with Zoltan Vardy on The Launch Code

Building a startup in today’s world feels like an idea planted in everyone’s mind, yet the long, difficult journey and slim chances of real success often leave that seed unwatered and forgotten. But for those determined to turn their vision into reality, good news—Zoltan Vardy has cracked the code.

At the GLOBALS Sales Tech Festival—Club GLOBALS annual flagship event held in Barcelona on March 2nd, 2025— I sat down with Vardy for an exclusive avant-première of his upcoming book, The Launch Code, which was officially dropped on March 4th.

A business growth mentor and former corporate executive—having served as Senior Vice President of Global Sales at NBCUniversal International and CEO for Central & Eastern Europe at ProSiebenSat.1 Media—Vardy distills decades of experience into The Launch Code, a structured framework designed to help B2B founders transform ideas into palpable revenue.

In this interview, we dive into the core principles behind The Launch Code, exploring Vardy’s insights on sales, mindset, and the common pitfalls startups face. Whether you’re an entrepreneur searching for a roadmap to sustainable growth or a founder struggling with early-stage obstacles, Vardy’s expertise offers invaluable guidance. Today, we take a closer look.

There’s no doubt about Zoltan Vardy’s success in the business world, and you don’t have to dig deep to see why. He carries himself with natural confidence yet remains approachable, striking a balance between professionalism and warmth.

When I admitted that I was a little nervous about the interview—because I’m no expert on the subject—he put me at ease instantly, saying:

“…don’t worry about it. I’ll try to be as clear and as simple in my communication as possible.”

The Interview

Welcome, Zoltan. It’s a pleasure to have you with us today.

Q: There are many books about this subject. What gap or industry glitch did you find that made you feel like this is necessary? How does it distinguish itself from the others?

R:
Well, you know, I think what makes it unique is: a lot of the sales books out there follow a very practical, tool-driven approach. Do this, then do this, then do this—right? So it’s often very much a guide to executing the idea, the skills, the techniques.

What I realized is that many of the companies I worked with—the founders weren’t even mentally prepared to apply these tools and techniques because some fundamental things were missing.

So, when I wrote the book, what I realized through my conversations and my work with founders is that there’s a mindset you have to adopt first. And it’s only after you accept that mindset that you can then be successful in applying the principles.

So the book is really about not just strategies and tactics, but mindset as well.

Q: So what’s that mindset?

R:
The mindset, for me, starts with understanding that sales matters. There’s an expression I use: Nothing happens until somebody sells something. So what that means is just understanding that—even if you fear sales, even if you’re not comfortable with it, even if you feel like, “well, my product’s so great, people should discover it”—until you accept the fact that sales matters, you’re never going to be successful as a founder.

So that’s the first principle.

The second principle is: once you understand that, then you have to realize that sales is not about convincing someone to buy something they don’t need. You know the overused image of the car salesman trying to fool someone into buying a bad car? Sometimes people have that impression of salespeople. But I believe sales is not about that.

It’s about helping someone solve an important problem. I talk about the connection between the problem and the solution. That’s the foundation of successful selling: identifying what problem you solve, who you solve it for, and why you solve it better than anyone else.

Once you accept that, sales doesn’t feel like an imposition. It becomes: “Look, I’m offering you a solution to something you have a problem with.”

Once you internalize those two principles, it really becomes a question of: How can I adopt this and use certain principles and tools to become successful at sales, build momentum, and then build the company you dream about?

Q: You highlight the importance of messaging in sales. What’s the most common mistake founders make when crafting their pitch?

R:
The single biggest mistake founders make is thinking they’re everything to everybody.

They create this ocean of opportunity and think that the wider they spread the net, the more successful they’ll be in catching clients. Actually, I’ve found the opposite is true.

The more narrow your focus, the more niche you are, the more likely you’ll become the perfect solution to one very specific problem—rather than one of many possible solutions to many different problems. And that’s how you scale.

Think about Amazon. Today, Amazon is everything to everybody. But when it began, it sold a single product: books, to 20-something men using the internet in the mid-1990s who were looking to access titles they couldn’t easily find in bookstores.

That was the problem-solution connection.

Only after nailing that connection were they able to scale and add music, movies, and all the rest. I call that the tip of your spear. Once you break through the wall, you can expand.

Many founders make the mistake of expanding too broadly and never breaking through that wall.

Q: At what point should a startup transition to hiring a dedicated sales team?

R:
There’s always that beginning stage—the pain of sales—when you’re iterating, testing, failing, rethinking. That process can take two, three years. This idea of overnight success? It mostly happens in movies.

Yes, some people get lucky—like picking the right lottery numbers. But for the overwhelming majority, the struggle at the beginning is real. And it’s necessary.

You have to understand your customer, create a product that solves a meaningful problem, and take feedback from the market to refine your offer.

When you’ve got a clear message, a clear target audience, and you’re seeing traction—that’s when it makes sense to consider hiring someone to take full-time responsibility for sales.

And here’s another reason: if founders handle sales in the early stages, they’ll understand what kind of salesperson they actually need to hire—because they’ve done it themselves.

Q: What’s one unconventional sales tactic from The Launch Code that has surprised founders the most?

R:
How can you explain—in 10 seconds or less—what problem you solve, who you solve it for, and why you’re better than anyone else at solving it?

I’ve developed a five-step process in the book that helps founders build a sentence that answers exactly that. And what’s amazing is—when founders go through it, they often have a physical reaction. Shoulders relax. They smile. It’s that “Oh, I finally get it” moment.

It’s simple, but incredibly impactful—and something that founders really benefit from.

Q: In founder-led sales, confidence is key. How do you recommend technical founders overcome discomfort in selling?

A:
In my experience, you build confidence through success. The more success you have, the more self-assured you become.

I worked with a founder in Poland—very typical tech guy. Product-focused. Quiet. Not confident in sales at all.

As he started applying The Launch Code principles, he gained traction—and confidence. Soon he was presenting, doing LinkedIn videos, closing deals. After two years, he’d grown revenues by 400%, went from six clients to 52, and expanded from one country to 12.

It was like talking to a different person.

That transformation is what I’m proud of. When you adopt the right mindset and approach, you go from fearing sales to actually loving it.

It’s all about breaking through your own barriers. Persistence is a powerful motivator—a basic ingredient to success.

Q: What’s the biggest mindset shift a founder needs to adopt to implement The Launch Code successfully?

Maybe one thing I would emphasize is: people buy books or courses with motivation, but then they put them in a drawer and forget about them.

I would encourage founders—if you buy this book—take the time to go through the process. There’s no magic. There’s no hidden “sell” button that suddenly works.

We live in a world full of Instagram and LinkedIn “experts” saying: “Do this and be a millionaire overnight.” Posing with Lamborghinis and model girlfriends.

I don’t believe in that. That’s hustling, not building a business.

I wrote this book for entrepreneurs, not hustlers. For people solving meaningful problems in meaningful ways—something they believe in. And that belief is what gets you through the hard times.

If you’re just doing it for the money or the flashy lifestyle—it won’t last.

Q: So it’s about authenticity?

A:
Authenticity. Absolutely. Authenticity.

Q: The book is pretty approachable. It’s not just for salespeople—it’s for entrepreneurs, right?

A:
Everything is sales. You’re selling yourself in a job interview. You’re selling when you’re trying to convince someone of your opinion.

I think people shy away from sales because they have a negative view of it. But everything is selling. And while this book targets startup founders and early-stage companies, the principles can honestly apply to your life—not just your business.

Thank you, Zoltan, for sharing your expertise and experiences with us.

International Professional Experience (IPE) in Barcelona

So here I am—Jan, a Polish intern who jumped from the Netherlands to Barcelona to dive into the world of tech and innovation with Club GLOBALS. Moving to a new country for work is a wild ride, filled with excitement, challenges, and, yes, a bit of culture shock. But let me tell you, it’s 100% worth it. Here’s a look at what it’s really like working abroad in Barcelona, some hard-learned tips on adapting to life here, and why an internship at Club GLOBALS is pretty awesome.

Why Bother with an International Internship?

Sure, working abroad looks great on a resume, but it’s so much more than that. Stepping out of your comfort zone and immersing yourself in a new culture challenges you to grow. You meet people who think, work, and live differently, broadening your perspective and teaching you to adapt, communicate cross-culturally, and face challenges with creativity and resilience. It’s about building independence, confidence, and problem-solving skills in real-time. You discover new ways of life, make meaningful connections, and embrace diverse voices that reshape your approach to work and collaboration. This experience transforms your career and outlook, preparing you for future opportunities.

Wondering If an International Professional Experience in Barcelona is Worth It?

Curious if pursuing an international professional experience in Barcelona is worth it? From my perspective as an intern at Club GLOBALS, the answer is a resounding yes! Barcelona offers the perfect blend of professional growth and cultural richness. Working in an international hub allows you to hone valuable skills like networking, cross-cultural communication, and adaptability. The city itself inspires creativity with its vibrant energy, rich history, and stunning architecture. Beyond professional opportunities, Barcelona fosters a lifestyle where work and leisure harmonize beautifully. Whether collaborating with diverse teams or exploring the city’s beaches and tapas, this experience is truly transformative.

Find Your Dream Internship

When considering an internship in Barcelona, it’s crucial to ensure you’re not settling for something that doesn’t resonate with your career path or passions. If you’re working with an agency, be proactive in voicing your expectations and ambitions. Many agencies may initially offer roles that feel generic—like assisting at a rental bike shop. Unless you’re genuinely excited about mobility, this might not be the right fit for you. Instead, push for opportunities that align with your field of study or long-term goals. Barcelona’s thriving sectors, like tech, sustainability, and international business, offer rich internships that challenge and inspire, making the experience truly worthwhile.

Tips for Living in Barcelona as an International Intern

Barcelona’s unique mix of culture, innovation, and work-life balance makes it the perfect place to live and work. For anyone new to the city, here are a few tips to help you adapt:

1. Adapting to Barcelona’s Relaxed Mediterranean Rhythm

Barcelona values work-life balance in a way that many other cities don’t. People work hard, but they also know how to unwind. Don’t be surprised by the long lunches, the emphasis on socializing, or even the mid-afternoon siestas. Embracing this balanced pace will help you settle in and enjoy life here fully.

2. Picking Up Basic Spanish Will Help You More Than You Think

Barcelona may feel international, but I quickly noticed that English isn’t as commonly spoken as you might expect—especially outside of tourist areas. Learning some basic Spanish (or even Catalan) goes a long way here. Knowing a few simple phrases can make daily interactions smoother, whether you’re ordering coffee, asking for directions, or chatting with locals. Plus, Spanish is easier to pick up than it seems, and people appreciate the effort. A little language goes a long way in helping you feel more at home in the city.

3. Explore Beyond Tourist Spots

Barcelona’s neighborhoods reveal hidden charms beyond the main attractions. Gràcia’s bohemian streets, Poblenou’s beachside art scene, and El Raval’s vibrant galleries and cuisine each showcase a unique side of the city. Sant Andreu offers traditional markets, while Montjuïc provides scenic views and peaceful gardens. For a fresh perspective, try a bike tour around Barcelona to explore these areas up close. And don’t miss the chance to travel outside the city by train to nearby spots like Garraf and Castelldefels, where quieter beaches and local vibes await, offering an authentic taste of the region’s diversity.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to explore even more of Spain’s incredible destinations. I visited Tarragona, famous for its Roman ruins, and took a scenic road trip to Andorra with unforgettable stops at Montserrat, Manresa, Cardona, La Molina, and Blanes. Each location offered a mix of breathtaking landscapes, cultural heritage, and hidden gems, making my internship experience in Spain truly extraordinary.

4. Finding Housing in Barcelona

The housing market in Barcelona can be a challenge, especially for interns. Check out websites like Idealista or Spotahome, and don’t overlook expat Facebook groups. Many interns find that sharing a flat helps keep costs down and can lead to new friendships. And most important, start looking for your accommodation on time! I started looking just one month before my internship, and it was a bit of a scramble. Ideally, give yourself at least a month—Barcelona’s housing market is competitive, and the earlier you start, the better options you’ll have.

5. Get Familiar with Public Transportation

Barcelona’s public transportation is efficient, affordable, and covers the entire city. The T-Casual card offers 10 rides at a discount, ideal for occasional trips. For regular use, the 30-day T-usual pass provides unlimited rides, perfect for daily commutes or exploration. For extended stays, the 90-day T-jove pass is popular with students and interns, giving three months of unlimited travel. Eco-conscious travelers can opt for Bicing, the city’s bike-sharing program, while the NitBus night buses are convenient for late nights. For weekend escapes, trains connect Barcelona to nearby gems like Sitges and Montserrat, making exploration easy and accessible.

6. Tips to Make the Most of Your Stay

If you’re traveling solo to Barcelona, don’t stay cooped up in your room—venture out and embrace the city’s vibrant social scene! Explore cozy bars, enjoy dining alone, and strike up conversations with locals or fellow travelers. Joining WhatsApp groups, especially those for expats can help you connect with like-minded people and get insider tips. By actively seeking out social opportunities, you’ll not only make your stay more enjoyable but also build friendships that could last well beyond your trip. Barcelona is full of energy and friendly faces—make the most of it!

Finding Affordable Health Insurance in Germany to Work, Study, and Live

Germany boasts a highly praised and well rounded health insurance system that is essentially comprised of three different parts. There is the Public Health Insurance System (GKV), the Private (PKV) and the Expat Health Insurance System. To qualify for either of the three options, you have to meet certain requirements. These can be anything from your visa status,  your job situation, as well as the amount of money you earn.

Regardless, health insurance is absolutely mandatory for all residents of Germany.

Figuring out your best option is an important task! We’ve put together an article highlighting some of the best insurance options within Germany.

Public Health Insurance

If you are a regular employee earning under €62,550 per year, a student under the age of 30, or an EU citizen that is a freelancer/self-employed then we strongly recommend TK as your health insurance provider.

TK is regularly awarded as the No. 1 healthcare provider in Germany and it is clear why.

A quick, online sign-up process can get you insured within two days. All service and documentation is performed completely in English. And most importantly, it meets all the requirements for a Work Visa, EU Blue Card and the Student Visa.

Students benefit from a reduced price and can expect to pay roughly around €105 euros per month depending on their age. Employees can expect the standard 14.6% of their salary, with half paid by the employer.

Use our sign-up link and get insured today!

For those looking for an alternative, check out Barmers as an equally high-quality provider in Public Health Insurance.

Private Health Insurance

For employees earning a high salary and for freelancers failing to qualify for Public Health Insurance, Private Health Insurance is also a great option to consider.

Ottonova doubles as a private health insurance provider, meeting all the requirements for a Freenlance Visa and providing full support in English 24/7.

Feather’s also has a brokerage service where they play matchmaker with you and a trusted Private Health provider.

In both cases, the cost will be dependent on your overall risk profile in respect to your health. Factors such as how old you are or any existing health conditions.

Expat Health Insurance

Those just recently moved to Germany as a Job Seeker, a Working-Holidayer, Non-EU Citizens who are freelancers/self-employed, MiniJob employees, and German-Language school students do not qualify for the Public Health Insurance system. This leaves Expat Health Insurance as the best option.

Feather’s is an extremely affordable option that meets all visa requirements while providing a high standard of medical care. Everything is also done in English, making it the perfect choice! The monthly fee comes out to just about €70 a month.

Other up-to-standard options to consider are Ottonova and Foyers.

Choosing a suitable insurance provider in Germany is an important choice! It can be overwhelming at times, so feel free to contact us with any questions or consultation needed.

Berlin’s most desirable neighborhoods to live in

Ah, to live in Berlin. The capital of Germany is a bustling metropolis welcoming any and all who dare to call her home. Known for an open mentality, a top-notch nightlife scene, and home to a thriving start-up atmosphere, Berlin is an enticing choice to settle down in.

One of the key steps in doing so? Finding a place to live. The housing shortage in Berlin combined with the intricacies of German bureaucracy can make house hunting a headache. In an attempt to alleviate some of the stress, GLOBALS Homes features some of the best apartments in the city.

Choosing just where to live in Berlin is an important choice! The charm of Berlin is the different worlds that can be found depending on the neighborhood you happen to be in. Read on as we highlight three of Berlin’s most desirable neighborhoods – and the apartments that will let you call them home!

Lichtenberg

Just East of Mitte lies the quiet district of Lichtenberg. At first glance it can seem far removed from the vibrant and historic center of Berlin but don’t let that fool you!

In just 15 minutes you can arrive at Alexanderplatz. Strolling through this quiet suburb, its free from the broken glass and hipsters that crowd Kreuzberg and Neukölln’s busy streets.

Within 20 minutes from the Lichtenburg S+U station you can travel back in time and visit the historic former Stasi Headquarters, or travel to Vietnam and step inside the Dong Xuan Center, an Asian market with over 150 stalls. You can also visit one of East Berlin’s most famous attractions, Tierpark, a large zoo where animals have free roam and gives residents an amazing green space in the center of the district. Lichtenberg is a trending gem in Berlin, get here fast!

Mitte

Mitte means “center” or “middle” in German and you can bet that if you live in Mitte you can reach anywhere in Berlin’s city limits very easily. Not only are you well connected with transit, but the multiple bars, restaurants and cafes are not just there for the tourists.

Grab a craft beer around Torstrasse, visit the Berlin Wall Memorial or catch a show at Babylon Berlin or the Volksbühne and discover that thriving Mitte is the heartbeat of the city and one of the best districts to live in.

Schöneberg

Discover all the colours of Berlin within one district. Famous since the 1920s for its vibrant LGBTQ+ scene, Schöneberg really has something for everyone.

You can browse the latest trends at the famous KaDeWe (Kaufhaus Des Westens), one of the largest department stores in Europe. For nature lovers there is the protected biological park Schöneberger Südgelände, a nature reclaimed WWII rail yard and just in the district limits is Templehofer Field, the airport-turned-public-park, where you can catch the best sunsets in the city.

How to get a work visa in Germany

As March 2020, the new Skilled Immigration Act came to effect to improve and facilitate the arrival of international labor into the German market. The laws for qualified professionals with university degrees are now more flexible. More importantly, expanded to workers with vocational non-academic training.

To help you pursue your dream career, here you will find a complete guide of how to get a work visa in Germany.

To start: what makes a qualified professional?

Is considered in this category, any candidate with a tertiary education degree (concluded within the country or abroad) or with vocational training of at least two years of length. In both cases, you will need to obtain official recognition of your professional qualification, before applying for the work visa.

This procedure is mandatory for regulated professions, such as engineer, teacher, lawyer, doctor, nurse and other health related occupations. In this case, a written permission to exercise your profession can also be asked by the German mission abroad. The recognition prerequisite does not apply to non-regulated careers. Such as chefs, artists, managers and athletes; but is encouraged to assist employers in the moment of hiring. Same rule applies for candidates who have completed their professional training or higher education in Germany.

At the Anerkennung In Deutschland website, you can find the complete list of regulated and non-regulated professions, as well as the step by step to get your recognition. Your visa application will not be processed if your qualification has not been officially recognised yet. So that should be your priority.

Job Seeker Visa and the saga for a job opportunity

One of the biggest additions brought by the new Skilled Immigration Act is the suspension of priority for EU members. That means that the Federal Employment Agency no longer checks if the position could be occupied first by a German or European citizen; giving equal opportunity for qualified workers. The new law also states that international job opportunities are no longer restricted to occupations experiencing shortage.

If that is not already a big help, the Job Seeker Visa comes to facilitate even more for you to find your dream job. This type of visa, allows qualified professionals to enter the country and stay up to six months to get a full time contract with an employer. All you need is to have your qualification recognized (if it is the case), proof that you can financially support yourself during the period, and present level B1 of knowledge on the German language. With the Job Seeker Visa, you are authorized to work up to 10 hours per week on a trial basis.

Getting your skills developed

In specific cases, the German authorities might conclude that your qualification does not meet the position’s requirements. For that situation, there is the visa for Training and Skill Development. The documentation prerequisite is to present level A2 of knowledge on the German language, and it gives the candidate a residence permit valid for 18 months, extendable for another 4 months. During this period, you will be able to apply for a study or work permit within the country.

How to speed up the process?

If you already found a job opportunity, you can get in touch with your employer to submit a fast-track application. In this procedure, the professional needs to authorize the future employer to send the documentation for the local foreigner’s authority. They will be the ones responsible for obtaining the approval from the Federal Employment Agency. Once you receive the preliminary approval, you can make a visa application appointment at your local mission abroad office. This option costs 411 euros and can take up to six weeks.

Can my family come along?

The visa procedure also covers the candidate’s spouse and minor unmarried children. For the approval, all the applications (including all the members) should be submitted at the same time. The applicant must also provide proof of financial means for the entire family’s living and housing cost, without any support from the German state.

Important to mention: this condition does not extend for the Job Seeker kind of visa.

What are the exceptions?

The visa rules apply differently for members of the EU freedom of movement regime; including all European Union member states, as well as citizens of Iceland, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein; who can enter the country without a visa and are not required to obtain permission to take up employment. Changes also affect citizens from United States of America, Canada, Israel, Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In their case, they are allowed to enter Germany without a visa and submit an application for residence within the country.

Especial rules also apply to candidates over 45 years old. If that’s your case, your gross annual salary for the position you’re about to take should be of at least 45,540 euros and you must provide proof of old age pension provisions as well.

Zukunft Personal 2019

Zukunft Personal is the largest HR management fair. In 2019 it was back in Cologne, Germany from 15 to 17 September. The event was hosted at a beautiful location. The outside area got a view over the river and at sunset the view was amazing.
GLOBALS‘ team was proud to participate for the third time. And we brought AiRelo with us again to show it to HR leaders, decision-makers and managers and just like in 2018 we were gonna teach them all about ‘Startup Village’, a hub designed especially for startups with digital solutions for companies.

We had our own stand for 3 days, which was filled with information about AiRelo. Besides that, we were also giving away many exciting Airelo goodies, like our iconic green glasses. Stylish. There were also some other cool Stands at the event where we talked to interesting entrepreneurs.
Some people gave presentations which attracted a lot of attention. One of those people was our own Mario Paladini. He gave a presentation about Networking.

During our time at the event, we got the chance to interview people about their companies. This led to great conversations with great people. Fun photos were taken as well.
