Top 5 Great Leadership Books

Reading fosters empathy and critical thinking — two qualities that are essential in a good leader. It’s no wonder, then, that being an avid reader and an effective leader are often two things that intersect. Barack Obama reportedly read for an hour every night at the White House, and to this day releases his favorite reads yearly. Bill Gates, meanwhile, is reported to read at an incredible speed of 150 pages an hour.

If you’re trying to cultivate your leadership skills through books, there are tons out there written by experienced leaders around the world who have provided insight into how they’ve reached their achievements. Here are five books that can help you.

Click on the books to find out more!

Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull together and Others Don’t’

by Simon Sinek

‘Leaders Eat Last’ is a book on getting people to work behind your organizational ideas. In it, Simon Sinek emphasizes creating a safe workspace that fosters a sense of belonging, shared values, and empathy to drive cooperation and problem-solving. He instructs readers on how to bridge gaps between differences in perspectives and backgrounds to motivate positive cooperation. As such, leaders can understand how a supportive environment is critical to productivity and efficiency in the workplace.

‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’

by Daniel Kahneman

In ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’, Nobel Prize-winning author Daniel Kahneman explains the two systems of thinking. System 1 is oriented towards the more intuitive and emotional, while System 2 is primarily correlated with slow, deliberative, and logical thinking.

Kahneman explains how, for leaders, it’s important to overcome the tendency to default to intuitive biases and behaviors. Instead, he asserts that slow thinking will allow you to bypass cognitive faults in the thinking process that often lead to faulty decisions in the workplace.

‘Business Adventures: Twelve Classic Tales from The World of Wall Street’

by John Brooks

‘Business Adventures’ chronicles twelve narrative-like Wall Street stories full of business insights. Though published in 1969, its timelessness has appealed to renowned leaders like Warren Buffet who have a shared love for it.

Brooks imbues each story with intrigue and drama, leaving the reader free to form their own assessments of the case. He lays down events and narrates their intricacies and complications, showing leaders how moments like these can be defining — and how to overcome them.

‘Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter’

by Liz Wiseman and Greg McKeown

In this book, the authors cleverly use the image of “multipliers” — leaders who use their own skills to amplify their own team’s skillset. It’s a masterclass in unlocking your team’s potential so you can raise their performance overall. Ultimately, Liz Wiseman and Greg McKeown’s message is that the best leader isn’t necessarily the most capable. Instead, the best leader is the one who can get everyone to work better and smarter together, which the book teaches you how to do.

As a leader, you’ll need to be prepared for every possible scenario. Fortunately, books are a gateway to every insight you could ever need as a leader. By reading from those who’ve already succeeded, you can learn more about how to best conduct yourself and your team to reach your goals.

If you’re running a startup, you can also check out our article ‘Read to Increase Your Success in Startup Industry’ to see which books can help you!

‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’

by Dale Carnegie

Daniel Carnegie was born the son of a farmer and went on to become a bestselling author, lecturer, actor, and the founder of the Dale Carnegie Institute. His book, ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’, shares how building genuine relationships and facilitating sincere interactions will attract good people to work with you.

The book’s advice remains as relevant today as it ever has been. In order to work with a team, we have to develop a sincere interest in their wellbeing and ideas. For leaders, this can become the foundation for forming genuine connections within your team to achieve greater heights together.

Finding Affordable Health Insurance in Germany to Work, Study, and Live https://clubglobals.com/health-insurance-germany/ https://clubglobals.com/health-insurance-germany/#respond Fri, 20 Nov 2020 08:47:57 +0000 https://clubglobals.com/?p=25083 The post Finding Affordable Health Insurance in Germany to Work, Study, and Live appeared first on Club GLOBALS.

Finding Affordable Health Insurance in Germany to Work, Study, and Live

Germany boasts a highly praised and well rounded health insurance system that is essentially comprised of three different parts. There is the Public Health Insurance System (GKV), the Private (PKV) and the Expat Health Insurance System. To qualify for either of the three options, you have to meet certain requirements. These can be anything from your visa status,  your job situation, as well as the amount of money you earn.

Regardless, health insurance is absolutely mandatory for all residents of Germany.

Figuring out your best option is an important task! We’ve put together an article highlighting some of the best insurance options within Germany.

Public Health Insurance

If you are a regular employee earning under €62,550 per year, a student under the age of 30, or an EU citizen that is a freelancer/self-employed then we strongly recommend TK as your health insurance provider.

TK is regularly awarded as the No. 1 healthcare provider in Germany and it is clear why.

A quick, online sign-up process can get you insured within two days. All service and documentation is performed completely in English. And most importantly, it meets all the requirements for a Work Visa, EU Blue Card and the Student Visa.

Students benefit from a reduced price and can expect to pay roughly around €105 euros per month depending on their age. Employees can expect the standard 14.6% of their salary, with half paid by the employer.

Use our sign-up link and get insured today!

For those looking for an alternative, check out Barmers as an equally high-quality provider in Public Health Insurance.

Private Health Insurance

For employees earning a high salary and for freelancers failing to qualify for Public Health Insurance, Private Health Insurance is also a great option to consider.

Ottonova doubles as a private health insurance provider, meeting all the requirements for a Freenlance Visa and providing full support in English 24/7.

Feather’s also has a brokerage service where they play matchmaker with you and a trusted Private Health provider.

In both cases, the cost will be dependent on your overall risk profile in respect to your health. Factors such as how old you are or any existing health conditions.

Expat Health Insurance

Those just recently moved to Germany as a Job Seeker, a Working-Holidayer, Non-EU Citizens who are freelancers/self-employed, MiniJob employees, and German-Language school students do not qualify for the Public Health Insurance system. This leaves Expat Health Insurance as the best option.

Feather’s is an extremely affordable option that meets all visa requirements while providing a high standard of medical care. Everything is also done in English, making it the perfect choice! The monthly fee comes out to just about €70 a month.

Other up-to-standard options to consider are Ottonova and Foyers.

Ah, to live in Berlin. The capital of Germany is a bustling metropolis welcoming any and all who dare to call her home. Known for an open mentality, a top-notch nightlife scene, and home to a thriving start-up atmosphere, Berlin is an enticing choice to settle down in.

Within 20 minutes from the Lichtenburg S+U station you can travel back in time and visit the historic former Stasi Headquarters, or travel to Vietnam and step inside the Dong Xuan Center, an Asian market with over 150 stalls. You can also visit one of East Berlin’s most famous attractions, Tierpark, a large zoo where animals have free roam and gives residents an amazing green space in the center of the district. Who’s Hiring? English Speaking Jobs in Berlin after Corona https://clubglobals.com/whos-hiring-english-speaking-jobs-in-berlin-after-corona/ Fri, 31 Jul 2020 09:26:10 +0000 https://clubglobals.com/?p=22461 The post Who’s Hiring? Who’s Hiring? English Speaking Jobs in Berlin after Corona

English Speaking jobs

After the Corona crisis, many companies are beginning to hire again. And if you were worrying about unemployment instead of practicing your German, you are in luck! There are still many companies hiring for English speaking jobs in Berlin.

Times have certainly been tough. The past four months have seen record unemployment, layoffs, reduced hours and few government subsidies to the industries hit hardest by the global coronavirus pandemic. The Berlin job market during Corona shrunk and in April 2020 the unemployment rate in Germany jumped up to 13.2 per cent.  In the wake of a global pandemic, many are wondering where their next paycheck will come from. Especially expats and internationals who require contracts to continue their visas.

Fix up your CV

The good news is that there are still lots of companies hiring for various positions. So the first step you need to do is fix up your CV!

This goes without saying but a new job, a new CV. Don’t be afraid to get creative either – did you learn how to play the guitar during lockdown? Did you start a blog or cook a new recipe every week? This shows initiative, ambition and an eagerness to learn new skills – qualities which are important to have for a new job and can help fill in the gaps of your unemployment for a potential employer.

Pro Tip:  Use this CV review service to help tailor your CV for free to improve your CV.

English Speaking Jobs

While the job market is saturated with competition there is still hope – even if you haven’t quite mastered the German language yet. There are many industries in Berlin still hiring which offer English speaking positions.

Pro Tip: It is better to search directly through company websites. Smaller companies and startups many find it expensive to post on general job boards.

Start with These

To start, check out these Berlin-based companies who often look for international employees. They even consider expertise in languages other than German or English an advantage.

The world’s largest chemical company BASF regularly posts job offers, especially the IT jobs do not always require profound German skills.

The online food-ordering service Delivery Hero Holding GmbH operates in 12 countries and is based in Berlin. They pride themselves in having an international startup atmosphere with English as a working language and offer jobs in IT, Operations, Marketing, Finance, and Content.

The multinational ebay offers positions around Germany and in Berlin for careers in IT and Management as well as many working student positions.

The Google office in Berlin has postings for Sales & Account Management, Marketing & Communication and more.

Finnish multinational Nokia offers positions for students and graduates as well as opportunities in IT and Project Management.

If you are missing the clubs in Berlin during the Corona closure, why not put your music knowledge and skills to the test by working with Soundcloud, or Deezer, the Berlin based streaming platform which is always looking for content creators, software developers, marketing and operations assistants.

The fashion e-commerce company Zalando was founded in Germany in 2008 and has since spread across Europe but still has its headquarters in Berlin. They offer positions in fields such as IT, Marketing, Controlling, Design, etc.

Some other top expat employers in Berlin include:

Ada Health Healthcare app             Arvato Call center

Auto1.comTransport                        AWS Amazon E-commerce

Babbel Language app                     Bertelsmann Various

Blacklane Transport                        Booking.com Hotel platform

Houzz Online retail platform            Infarm Urban farming

Movinga Moving platform                N26 Online banking

Omio Travel platform                       Onefootball Football app

Orderbird POS system                    Raisin Finance

Sitel Call center                               Sixt Car rental

SmartFrog Tech                               Spark Networks Online dating

Sykes Call center                             Urban Sports Club Sport membership app

For Indeed.de alone, there are currently over 11 589 jobs in project management, HR, finance, business, customer service, product development and more available to apply to!

Glassdoor  offers jobs in English and other languages for Berlin-based companies and is less trafficked than the more popular sites such as Indeed which has been a staple for internationals looking for jobs since 2004.

Additionally, if your German isn’t terrible, it is worth searching through Monster and Xing which tend to be used more by German companies.

Remember to Keep Applying!

It is frustrating not to hear back from potential employers, but don’t give up! These resources and tips will help you succeed when searching for a job post corona. Remember to keep your eyes and ears open to network as much as you can. Once events for international connections and job-seeking such as Club GLOBALS Welcome Day start up again be sure to attend and participate. 5 Must have gadgets for Expats !

1. Wheeled backpack

We all know the struggles with luggage woes, bumping into each seat, or person, than the handle breaks or you wrist hurts because you have to carry the heavy luggage everywhere.

Did you ever heard of the Wheeled Backpacks and or Rolling Backpacks. These backpacks are here to solve all the luggage woes! The wheels are invaluable and almost always usable. When you don’t want to carry your backpack you can easily roll it down the streets. And if you have to walk on stairs or on sand you just grab your bag, adjust the straps, put it on your back and you are ready to go!

Not only is the backpack easy to use, it is also good for your health. If you travel, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable. With this backpack you can switch between rolling the backpack or putting it in your back, so less back problems.

When you travel with a backpack you’re usually only able to access your gear from the top or bottom. Finding what you’re looking for is downright painful and typically results in clothes everywhere. Rolling backpacks load like a duffle bag but still on your back!

At least if you need to use a four-wheel bag as a two-wheel, you simply tilt it forward and pull it that way. you have a double usage instead of being limited to one. Awesome!

2. Solar phone charger

We all have phones, laptops, camera’s etc. And we all once have had the struggle that we had no charger or electricity and the battery was about to die. That’s the worst thing that can happen !

Solar phone chargers can help you in situations like this. The Solar phone charger
makes sure that you can recharge your equipment, without needing electricity. Freedom of movement and environmental friendliness are the two biggest reasons to own a solar battery charger.

The charger works only on sunlight. You can find the sun pretty much anywhere on Earth during the daytime. So, if you find yourself lost in the woods with a dead cell phone, you need only the sun’s rays to get it up and running again.

You can even buy a waterproof and dustproof solar phone charger and the size of these things are really compact and they weight between the 280 to 850 g. You can easily hook the solar charger to a backpack, or sit in one hand. It should be able to recharge its battery even when your phone isn’t connected. That way,

you can take advantage of a sunny day, and recharge your phone later that night when it’s actually running low on battery. A must have right!

3. Track stick

A Track stick is a satellite route calculator and tracker, it is a small USB device that you can put in your car, your bike or even just carry it around while walking and it will store data of your routes via satellite and navigate the streets for you via Google Maps.

As an expat getting to know your new host country, it’s not easy to find the best routes in the city and you might find yourself a bit lost within a car with a faulty navigation system. While your smartphone can show you a map of where you are, Track stick can assist you by showing you where you came from and the best route to go to where you’re going. Not all countries and cities have local apps that can guide you with city navigation, so having a gadget like this that can calculate your routes anywhere in the world through satellite navigation can be really useful. never get lost again !

4. E-reader

For the ones who love to read books, a E-reader is highly recommended.  The E-reader is just around 200 g. It’s compact and thin. So you can take it everywhere with you and read.

You can get a lot of free books or for a low price. Free classics are easy to find or you can borrow books from your local library ect.

Also don’t Give Up Highlighting or Note-taking in your books. On the E-reader you can still highlight sentences or write notes in it, because you went digital.

The E-reader can not hurt your eyes, because there are brightness settings that go all the way down for daytime reading, and there is a glare-free screen. Also it uses less energy than a tablet.

At last but not least. Some people like to switch between books and read them. On the E-reader that is possible as well. You will not only have all your books with you but the weight you carry is less, than if you would take all your books with you.

5. Multi-tool

The name speaks for it self. Be always prepared !

Everyone want a highly functional multi-tool that is readily available and offers a wide variety of carry options for simple and effective solutions to everyday problems.Having a multi-tool is far beyond handy. It has adaptability, it’s convenience and it is efficient.

You might not always need a ruler, a hex driver, a bottle opener, a pry bar, or whatever other functions your multi-tool has to offer. But you’ll be glad that they were included when you do.They are in mobile format and weighs almost nothing. Especially if you travel or you are an expat you want one, because you don’t want to take a big ruler, bottle opener ect. with you.

Arriving in a new country is never easy especially when you don’t really know anyone who’s been there before. That’s what happened to me when I decided to study abroad in Munich for my exchange program.

Registration

I arrived there with my suitcase. And without a clue on how I would manage to make friends and do all the paperwork. Munich University of Applied Sciences helped me with my health insurance (Expat, Public or Private) and public transportation papers. And that’s it. Then my landlord explained to me that I had to register for something called KVR (Kreisverwaltungsreferat, it’s the registration office) and it seemed important. She gave me an address saying that I should go early in the morning because of the crowded lines; bringing with me my ID and accommodation contract. At the end, I waited 2 hours there (which is really not that bad), struggling with the registration lady since she didn’t speak any English. But with my stammering German and her patience; we did it! This was one of my hardest experience in Munich.

Life in Munich

Living the expat life at its fullest is also stepping out of its comfort zone and becoming friends with people from different countries. I truly enjoyed having an insight point of view from US citizen on Trump’s election. As well as a Brazilian opinion on Dilma Rousseff scandal, police demonstrations, and strikes. Having international friends is also a great way to improve your language skills. My first week in Munich was challenging since I was unsure about my words, sentences and my accent in English or German. At the end, I had to communicate and made progress real quickly.

Living in a Student residence (Studentenstadt) helped me meeting new people quite easily. Each Thursday there was a party in one of the buildings of the residence.

The night life in Munich was diversified and for everybody. For club lovers, there is the MMA which plays electronic music and has a really nice setting and large rooms. There is also Neuraum is with 4 floors, electro, party/ dance, hip-hop and traditional German music. Bahnwärter Thiel is a really special electro club with a nice and special interior (one part of the club is in a train) among many other clubs. For hipstery bar, there is the Stammbar where you can pour your own beer. Biergartens are also a must-see in Munich, especially during summer time. Last but not least the Oktoberfest is truly a great way to drink and mingle with your new table’s neighbors, I met a lot of foreign people but also many locals.

Visiting the doctor

The other one was when I visited the Doctor. I tried to find a “without appointment” doctor online but it was not easy. I finally asked a local friend if she knew any doctor who could accept me without an appointment. She then gave me her doctor’s address.

When I arrived, I tried to explain my situation in English to the doctor’s secretary but she didn’t speak a word of English. I had to use my not-that-great German and she understood that I needed to see the doctor. She gave me paperwork to do since it was my first time visiting a doctor in Germany. The papers were very hard to fill in: most of them were only in German. We spend an hour filling them. She explained to me what I had to write in German and google translator was also very helpful. When I finally saw the doctor, I found out that she spoke perfectly English and was really relieved because I only had some knowledge in German and it would have been difficult to explain to her what I had in German.

Discoveries

As a French person, I didn’t live a total “lost in translation” scenery. A lot of Germans spoke perfect English and some even spoke French. Here are some differences I noticed during my stay. I already knew that Germans are respectful of the law but I was still surprised when I saw that everybody was waiting for the green light to cross the street even if there was no car around. And the look people gave me when I crossed in the middle of the street kept me for doing it again. In subway stations, there is no fence to access the subway and there are not that many people who don’t pay their ticket.

The German’s politeness stroke me when I arrived, everybody was very polite and eager to help you in every way they could. Of course, there are some exceptions and some people talked to me in Bayerische so sometimes I didn’t understand anything.

Germany does not often accept credit cards, they have special cards called “giro card” to pay in supermarkets. They always use cash. At the beginning, I was not comfortable carrying 100€ on me every day for my groceries or other stuff because I was still worrying about pickpockets. In Munich, it is very safe. You can come back home after a night out at 4 am and no one will bother you in the streets or the subway.

To put it in a nutshell, these six months were very fulfilling. I gain a lot of autonomy and maturity. Making new friends allowed me to broader my horizons. I discovered how much I loved living in Germany and will do everything I can to work and live there.
